GUT HEALTH // Game Plan & Supplements | Pillow Talk (E11)

» PLEASE NOTE: I filmed this video at the end of July- I apologize for the later upload.
I’ve had some newer updates pertaining to my health, but won’t be sharing for awhile until I have more information to share and am a little more on top of it.

If it is what I think it could be, it completely ties in with this video, though it means that stress could be only a factor (and not sole reason) in my gut (and health) being so off.

As of currently, my gut feels so much better (though no where near 100%), but I’m still having multiple symptoms showing up with autoimmune, hormonal and neurological issues that are really beating me down some days. I’ve absolutely noticed more sad/ anxious days and I really have appreciated your support throughout.

As I said, I’ll be sharing a little more in the coming months.

Check out Desiree Nielsen:

AS FOR NOW I’ve been focusing on-

Healthy Fats (such as: Avocado, Hemp Hearts, Nuts, MCT Oil, Healthier Vegetable Oils like Hemp, Walnut, Olive Oil, Avocado Oil etc.)
They not only help with feeling ‘full’ but it’s where I’m getting my ‘energy’ from.

Protein (Such as: Beans, Lentils, Chickpeas, Hemp Hearts, Pumpkin Seeds/ nuts etc)

Non Starchy Carbohydrates (Occasionally having Quinoa, eating little to no bread etc.)

Anti Inflammatory supplements:

Turmeric (or Curcumin)

Supplements/ Things I’m finding helpful:

Adrenotone (to support my Adrenal)
Integrative Therapeutics brand – Panplex 2 Phase Digestive Aid
Saje – Eaters Digest Essential Oil
Fennel Tea
Ginger Tea

(Not mentioned in video but I take/ use)
5HTP supplement
I’ve also been drinking Spearmint tea to help lower my testosterone levels
Apple Cider Vinegar – (I don’t drink Kombucha as carbonated things have never sat well with my tummy)

Some of you were confused in my last video as I didn’t properly articulate- I’ve been seeing a Naturopath AND traditional Doctors. Still nothing crazy or useful has been coming up in my testing done.

I AM NOT A DOCTOR. PLZ BE NICE. DOING MY BEST 🙂 Also a reminder that just because this is what I’m doing does NOT mean it’s a perfect fit for you. Best thing would be to talk to a professional.

  • True statements! I’ve been mostly vegan 10 years, but I got a serious parasite infection last year and it was horrible. I’m on the road to healing, and take many things similar to you. I did decide to eat meat and bonebroth, but just so I could heal my gut. The parasite can make people sensitive to foods that otherwise you wouldn’t have had problems in the past eating! 🙁 it is very frustrating. I’m dedicating my channel to healing the gut and body. 😉

  • I feel your pain on this I have been struggling for the past few years. It can be so confusing and frustrating which is annoying because stressing out about fixing it does the opposite of helping. Its really cool to know its not just me I really appreciate you talking about this.

  • Hi Karissa, I know it’s been a few months since you posted this video but I hope you’re doing okay! I resonated so much with this video and I’ve been struggling severely for 6 months with similar issues. My gut issues seemed to come out of the blue, one day I didn’t have issues the next I did! I hope to implement some of your recommendations over the next month and see some improvement fingers crossed! It’s nice to know that you aren’t alone and that there are others with the same problems.

  • CBD is a miracle. I also use a salve, I prefer the Sisters of the Valley one (I have a review if you’re interested, either way, google them). I deal with a lot of pain, it’s magic for everything. Great for stress, too.

  • I can relate so much to this and what you said. I recently lost someone very close to me and it's really taken its toll on my body. I am a shell of my former self. I've been watching Sarah's Day because she focuses quite heavily on gut health etc.

I've slowly started eating more vegetarian keto so to speak, and it seems to be helping. I need better probiotics though, mine are ineffective.

Thanks for informing us, Karissa. You're a strong human!! 😘😘😘

I just thought it was all in my head and that I am being winny…..but like u said, many times we wait to be "human" till we get home…tanks for the great tips=)

  • Love that i get to watch this – i've been waiting for this video for too long! I struggle with a lot of gut heath issues, so in turn mental health issues!
Pls just be cautious taking 5HTP (and some other vitamins) frequently or longterm as it isn't recommended – it can cause some nasty side effects, like anxiety!

  • Karissa,

As small business owners I think we are more susceptible to these things. I literally have gone through this SAME exact thing as you over the last 5 years of my life. Thank you for making this. I won't go into detail because it's literally the SAME exact thing but I want you to know you're not alone. Also LOVE that you are meditating. I'm actually a Mala designer (Malabella Jewels). If you don't know Malas are necklaces (and bracelets) used to meditate and focus your energy and intention on. I love you so much and love watching your videos! I'd LOVE to gift you some jewels to love, wear, and meditate with! Check us out at and please let me know if you'd like any! So much love. Hannah

  • I hope you see this comment. I just watched this video and so sounds like me right now. I'm stressed and vegan eater and run daily but I have been spirleing hard down hill and have so many skin rashes and horrible pain in joints and stomach and heartburn. I cannot afford too much healthcare so anything I can do at home besides the items you mentioned?

  • I am looking forward to an update on whether or not the spearmint tea is helping lower your testosterone levels, I was on spironolactone but I am hoping to regulate my levels naturally. Thanks for sharing this video with us. 💗

  • I'm feeling ya!!! I moved from Australia to the US, leaving my family and friends, huge stress involved. It played havoc on my gut, I lost loads of weight, my appetite and was in terrible pain everyday. 10 months later I am slowly getting better. I take 5htp and many other changes. The gut is our second brain and is as important to be healthy and balanced. Best of luck with your healthy gut journey🤗

  • This has been so helpful! Thank you for sharing. After watching this and doing some research I think my sudden skin issues (eczema of the hands) may be a gut related issue 😦 I paid a lot of money to see a well known dermatologist and he just told me it was most likely genetic (despite NEVER having any type of itchy skin issues my entire life) and proceeded to give me a strong cortisone cream which now I think steroids would have been just further impacting my hormones. Defs will be more gut conscious for now on and see if I notice a difference.

  • Hi love! I'm dealing with similar issues and I empathize with the frustration. But, the good news is that we are working on it now and educating ourselves on our bodies, so hopefully as we grow older our health will continue to thrive (without taking all those prescriptions that often create new health concerns even if they help an old one). Sending you lots of healing energy. I know it's tough most days, but we can do this!

  • This makes so much sense to me. I don't have problems as such. YET. When I was at Uni, I realised I would get this burning tummy feeling. Never thought much of it, had it a few years prior and Dr's just thought it was some bad food. I was like… it's literally a burn in my stomach. Not down below, in my tummy. THEN I started to notice it was always at exam time. So I knew it had to be stress related. Fast forward a few years, I've been practising yoga quite a lot and trying to look after myself as best I could and then that sort of all fell apart. For work. I'm now a higher up manager, more responsibility and don't get me wrong… I love it but my body doesn't. 6 months and I've stopped doing yoga. I put on 10kilos that I'd lost prior and I stopped walking my dogs in the sunshine of Newcastle Beach (Karissa, I know you have been to our beaches!). Throw on top of that, another key person in our office was made redundant and rightfully so but that leaves me with extra work. Which I welcomed. Two weeks ago, my tummy started burning. I said to my friend that I work with and who is my saviour, I am not even stressed.. but this is what I get when I am. WHAT BLOODY PLANET DO I THINK I'M ON IF I THINK MY BODY CAN HANDLE THIS!!! Watching this video has made me message my yoga instructor and tell him I'm coming back next week. Work can wait. My boss more than anyone understands mental health (he's a mental health Dr) and actually did voice his concerns about me 'burning out' one way or another. Thank you Karissa you bloody legend…… I think my body is about to spill and I don't want that happening. <3

  • So glad you are finding things that work for you most of the time. Have you heard about heartmath? It is basically using a certain type of meditation to switch from the fight or flight part of your nervous system to the state you are in when you are relaxed and your body feels it can heal itself. The great thing about it is that you can do it whenever you need it, but also that it has benefits even if you do it 10 minutes per day.

  • Ive had some issues myself and found that an amazing change was reducing my beans, lentils and chickpeas, I spoke to a nutritionist as well and because of the casing on them they can be extremely inflammatory. for anyone watching just a different side as well. I love them all but for me they aren't a good option for me.
